Working Magic with MS Excel

About Me

  • I'm Kevin - a freelance Excel specialist and VBA developer, based near Camberley in Surrey, trading under the name Excel Wizardry.
  • I have 40+ years experience of working in the commercial IT sector in a wide range of development and managerial roles.
  • I'm a Chartered IT Professional and a Member of the British Computer Society.

What I Do

  • I design and build spreadsheets, dashboards, databases, and applications using MS Excel and VBA
  • I combine Excel with other MS Office products such as Word, Outlook, and/or PowerPoint, to build integrated solutions
  • I connect Excel with other databases and to APIs via the internet.
  • I automate tedious, repetitive, business processes using Excel - often enabling hours of manual activity to be performed in a few minutes.

Contact Me About...

Services

Image

Spreadsheet Development

I build robust Excel workbooks to meet my clients' needs using best-practice design approaches and drawing upon the full capabilities of Excel.

Software Development

I write custom software to achieve far more than is possible with standard Excel features and formulae alone.

There are many practical, commercial examples of my work in my project portfolio, and a few more unsual uses of Excel in my blog.

Business Process Automation

I write software to partially or wholly automate routine tasks you perform on Excel, often performing hours of work in minutes - at the click of a button.

Database Development

I build simple, custom database applications with Excel (suitable for small businesses only) to (say) record customer details, track enquiries, orders, and payments, manage stock levels, etc.

These applications can include automated features to generate orders and invoices, send template emails, or generate standard reports.

MS Office Integration

Many of my projects incorporate multiple MS Office applications into the solution.

So for example, we might automatically read and consolidate the latest sales figures with Excel, refresh a number of pivot charts, post their images into a Word or Powerpoint template, and (once edited by the user) submit these to a list of email recipients using Outlook.

Online Communication

A number of my projects have required that I access information from online resources, or that I communicate with service endpoints or APIs on the web.

Examples would include near real-time communication with Betfair for one of my clients, or submission of VAT declarations for another (in response to HMRC's Making Tax Digital initiative).

Some frequently asked questions...
What is VBA?

VBA stands for Visual Basic for Applications. It's a rich programming language developed by Microsoft that's available inside most MS Office products.

It's original use was for running macros, but advanced users can use this to write software that automatically operates and controls these MS Office products, makes decisions, responds to events, controls other products, sends messages over the internet, and more.
